Folake Adebayo (b. 1997) graduates from the University of Lagos in 2025. She grew up around her father's metalworking shop in Mushin and started welding at 12.
Her sculptures are made entirely from materials collected from Lagos scrapyards. She exhibited at the Lagos Biennial in 2024 and was commissioned for a public work in Victoria Island.
"Everything I use has already been thrown away once. I just give it somewhere else to be."
I source all my materials from the informal recycling economy—the cart pushers, the scrap dealers. The work is about what happens when cities grow faster than they can manage.
